With the opening of registration right around the corner, new details have emerged about the 2012 Florida Sunshine Sea 2 Sea 72 hour adventure race.
Pangea Adventure Racing''s longest event to date, the Expedition style race will give veterans and rookies alike the chance to witness the Sunshine State from sea to sea.
We are excited to put on this race," said Greg Owners of Pangea. "We just need to iron out some last details before opening up registration. It should be real soon."
In the mean time some very important information has been released.
The race itself will start at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feburary 16, and head from the west side of Florida to the east. A host hotel will be designated near the finish where the teams will stay overnight on Wednesday and be able to park their cars during the race.
The race will be unsupported meaning the teams will not need a support crew to transport their gear during the race. Pangea will transport bikes & a team bin and provide canoes, paddles, & life vests.
Check in will be held on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the host location where teams will recieve course overview basically going over what to expect during the race and transitions.
The race will employ a 'navigation on the go' style meaning teams will recieve the maps they need as they are transititioning.
“What I'm trying to do is not have the hassle of managing a bunch of maps that they aren't even using," Owens said. "Once they use them they don't need to reference them anymore."
The first map will be handed out on the two hour bus ride from the host location to the race start. Early indications are that buses will be loaded around 6 a.m. on Thursday.
Overall the race is designed for the winning team to cross the finish line in about 58 hours. And while that represents the top class of racer, this race will be a good chance for lesser experienced teams to do a multi-day event.
“It's gonna be a course where even if someone hasn't done an expedition race before they will still be able to complete it," said Owens. "They may not visit all the checkpoints, but they will get all the way across the state on their own power”
It will be a typical Pangea event where each CP is worth one point and the standings are based first on amount of CPs and then by time. There will be several transition 'hubs' that will act as the start/finish for many disciplines. So slower teams will have different options to keep moving across the state.
The course will have multiple discipline changes throughout. While there may be a long section, for the most part they will be broken up to no longer than six to 10 hours on one discipline at a time.
The Sea 2 Sea will be the first bicoastal race in Florida since 2010 and Pangea hopes racers from all over will travel to see the Sunshine State.
"Of course it will be a little warmer down here in February than other places," Owens said. "But we also have a lot of beautiful natural land to show off. My hope is this race will offer a unique Winter escape for people and allow them to see what we (Pangea) are up to down here."
More details and registration dates will be released soon so stay tuned.
