Our favorite freaks certainly came out on Saturday/Sunday to race in the ultimate nocturnal event of the year. Those brave souls who took on the challenge came away with haunting memories they will never forget.
Besides the creepy feeling of being alone in areas with only the strange sounds of nature to keep them company; the racers will also be haunted by the standing water they trudged through that covered most of
Tosohatchee WMA.
The ten inches of rain that blanketed Christmas, FL all week created many problems for everybody. Besides keeping their feet wet throughout, the flooded trails slowed everyone down and made the trails themselves hard to indentify during the race.
Did we mention this race would be difficult under normal conditions? Teams from both races took on an impossible course with vast land coverage and more CPs than they could visit. Add on the varying point values based on difficulty and this race had no clear right or wrong strategy.
Primal Instinct, the winning Elite team, visited only two CPs on Trek.
Team BikeWorks / SOARteam.com, the winning Sport team, never even went out on the bike course. This was a race where you put your head down and just went at it until time ran out.
Amazingly, every single one of the 59 CPs we hung out there were visited by at least one team. That shows how spread out everyone was because the most CPs a single Elite team saw was 29, while the most CPs a single Sport team saw was 12.
This honestly was a brutal challenge. We know a lot of AR veterans revel in a demanding uphill battle like this with the options and strategies that make this sport fun. While we do wish the conditions were much drier, this race was intended to be an incredible test for any racer anywhere.
Needless to say the
difference between this race and the
Superhero AR coming up in September will be
night and day, literally and figuratively. Just know that if you were out there with us on Saturday/Sunday you then you have attempted something that most people will never get the chance to.
